The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the profession, science, and even art of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. Many people take up gemology more as a hobby. They become interested in collecting and evaluating items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. You'll even find some that like to travel to different areas close by to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If you have an interest in this hobby then read along as we discuss the various factors in gemstone collecting.

To start off right you need to read up on the wide variety of stones available. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for and prevent you from making mistakes. This will help you make informed decisions.

First on your list to consider is the color of the gemstone. You'll want the stone to be as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. The spectral colors are orange, red, violet, green, yellow, and blue. The prices for very pale or very dark gemstones are lower in value.

The cut of the gemstone is the second most important value determination to take a look at. How precise the cut is is the factor which determines how much light is reflected by the gemstone. It will fully determine the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

The clarity of a gemstone is the next item to consider. When we talk of clarity it relates to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. A perfect gemstone is obviously valued highly. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye you need a 10X gemstone loupe (gemstone clarity magnifier) or gem microscope. Most hobbyists will use an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different pricing structures. This is due to the difference regarding specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can be very enjoyable and rewarding in the long run. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the US. In New Mexico you'll find Turquoise, Garnet, Peridot, Rock Crystal and Obsidian And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or hunt the sapphire fields in Anakie, Rubyvale, Sapphire, Glenalva, The Willows, Inverell or Glen Innes in Queensland, Austalia.

The Andamooka Opal is a famous opal which was presented to Queen Elizabeth II in
the 1950s on the occasion of her first visit to Australia. It was discovered in
Andamooka, South Australia, an historic opal mining town. The opal was cut and
polished by John Altmann to a weight of 203 carats (40.6 g). It displays a
magnificent array of reds, blues, and greens and was set with diamonds into an

Even within the same type of gem, not all gemstones are equal. There is a huge variance that can result in one stone being graded gem quality and its similar 'cousin' being labeled industrial quality.

A factor in a gemstones value is its uniqueness. This means unusual colors or
patterns in the stone or rare and interesting inclusions or impurities. These
things are often appreciated and valued by custom, fine jewelers, but overlooked
by wholesalers. It may be hard to get a really good deal just going by the 4
Cs because everyone who buys and sells gemstones and gemstone jewelry
professionally goes by them to assess value. But if you are a careful observer,
you may be able to spot something special in a stone that someone else has
missed.
