How To Collect Gemstones
By Lee MacRae
Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because they are very beautiful items. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds their value increases over time. Many hobbyists love to find, collect and finish the wide variety of gemstones available today. Read long as we examine the loose gemstones hobby.
To begin with your first priority is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to understand as much as possible about the subject of gemstones. The more you know about each kind of gemstone the better off you'll be. You will know exactly what to look for.
To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they have even lent their names to specific colors. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones become higher in value when they equal the colors in the spectrum of yellow, blue, violet, green, orange and red. They are valued much less the more they deviate from the spectral color.
Gemstone cut is the second most important value determination to look at. How precise the cut is is the factor that determines the amount of light is reflected by the gemstone. The cut will factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and its final value.
Next up is the aspect of clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of a stone. Any large flaws can be seen with the unaided eye with others needing to be magnified 10X
Next thing to look at is the duo of weight and size. Because gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.
Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Take each gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the US in Alabama you can find Beryl, blue and yellow; Smoky Quartz and Hematite. And if you travel to Canada you will find nephrite jade in the Frances Lake area in the Yukon Territory or blue spinel from Daillebout, Quebec along with ammolite from Lethbridge, Alberta. Think of collecting gemstones as a great hobby and pastime.

Other than the oil on emeralds, which can last for years before needing replacement, any quality enhancement is permanent and should not require special care. With emeralds, you should simply be careful not to clean the stone too vigorously or you might remove the layer of wax or oil, changing the appearance of the stone. If this happens, bring it to your jeweler to have the layer reapplied. Bringing your emerald in for a cleaning and re-oiling on a regular basis will help keep it looking its best.
