So You Want To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. Many people have a great love of the various gemstones found worldwide today. This article will discuss a number of things you need to know when starting to collect varieties of gemstones yourself.

First off you need to read up on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know what you're buying and prevent you from wasting your money. Get the answer to questions like how, where and what to buy.

Color is a very important part in evaluating a gemstone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its pure spectral color the more valuable it is. Remember that the spectral colors include violent, blue, green,, orange and red. Colors that are darker or paler than a pure spectral color are considered a lower value.

How a stone has been cut is the second most important value determination to look at before a purchase is made. The preciseness of the cut determines the amount of light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will ultimately determine the brilliance of the stone and how much someone will pay for it.

Next to look at is gemstone clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone. Normally large flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to their size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different in prices as well. This is due to the difference in relative density or specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and crystal structure type For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can create an enjoyable hobby and pastime. And there is such a variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You could try collecting Agate, Pyrite or Tourmaline for example. The opportunities are seemingly endless. And if money is tight you can find gemstones for yourself instead of buying. For example in California you can find Agate, Benitoite, Californite, Diamond, Citrine, Tourmaline, Abalone Pearl, Kunzite, Chrysopras

Tips About natural russian diamond

Think twice before putting gems in an ultrasonic cleaner. Diamonds, rubies and
sapphires will be fine but many other gems may not be: when in doubt, leave it
out. Diamonds, rubies and sapphires, and other single-crystal gems can be
cleaned with a touch of ammonia in water to remove all films and add extra
sparkle. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner or ammonia for cleaning such opaque
gemstones like lapis, turquoise, malachite or onyx. They should be wiped clean
gently with a moist cloth. These gemstones can be porous and may absorb
chemicals, even soap, which may build up inside the stone and discolor it. The
reason why these materials need more care than transparent gemstones is that
these materials are essentially rocks, not crystals of a single mineral. Think
about it: when you put a rock in water, it absorbs the water and is moist all
the way through. A single crystal gem like sapphire will not absorb water: all
the molecules are lined up so tightly in the crystal that there is no room for
water to enter.

The Delong Star Ruby resides in the Natural History Museum in New York City. It
weighs 100.32 carats. In 1964 the Delong Star Ruby (along with the Star of India
) was the object of an infamous burglary, carried out by Jack Murphy, known as
Murph the Surf, and two other men. They were ransomed from $25,000 and both
recovered. The Delong Star was found at a designated drop off site - a phone
booth in Florida.

In parts of the world sapphires may have come from ancient formations that were
once impure marble which developed over time through metamorphic conditions into
crystalline cal silicates known as skarns. A skarn is a metamorphic rock that is
usually variably colored green or red, occasionally grey, black, brown or white.
It usually forms by chemical processes that form rocks during metamorphism and
in the contact zone of magma like intrusions. Skarns in the igneous environment
are associated with marble and wider zones of cal silicate rocks. Mixtures of
corundum, titanium and iron were also a part of the crystallization process.
Because of this process there are numerous inclusions in a sapphire, and like
the ruby, they are useful in verification techniques when authenticating the
stone.
