Starting To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? Well for one thing they are very beautiful items. And just like natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many hobbyists love to find, collect and finish the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. Follow along as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

The first thing you need to do is to get yourself some reading material. You want to understand as much as possible about the subject of gemstones. The more you know about the hobby of gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.

First on your list to consider should be the color of the stone. You'll want the stone to be as close as possible to the pure spectrum colors. The spectral colors are blue, green, yellow, orange, red and violet. In general terms, the prices of very dark are very pale precious and semi precious gemstones are lower than the vibrant colors.

How the gemstone is cut is the second most important factor to look at before a purchase. The precision of the cut determines the amount of light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will ultimately factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

The clarity in a stone is an important consideration. Gemstone clarity relates to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. The gemstone without flaws is obviously valued highly. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye requires a gemstone loupe or gemstone microscope. Most hobbyists will employ a jewelers diamond gemstone loupe 10X for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

You will note that gemstones are categorized according to their size criteria since it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different in prices as well. This is due to the difference regarding specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystal structure type A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can be very enjoyable and could be rewarding as well over time. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to take vacations to go looking for gemstones. For example in Montana you'll find Agate, Sapphire, Beryl, Amethyst, Smoky Quartz, Obsidian, Tourmaline and Garnet. Or you can take the time to travel and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Torrington, New South Wales, Australia or check out the quartz regions in Mt Hope or Inverell, New South Wales.

The colour intensity of an emerald depends on the chromium quantities. Maytime
Grass is considered to be the most beautiful. An emerald is one of the few
stones that actually will shine in the dark when a small amount of light appears
in the room. The colour occurs when the geochemical makeup of beryllium and
chromium are found together. The combination is not easily found, and considered
to be a rare phenomenon. Natural chemical processes are what really form the
stones.

Turquoise is one of December's birthstones and is a vibrant light blue stone
often seen in southwestern jewelry. It is reasonably priced and quite lovely.
Turquoise's color ranges from sky blue to green. It has a hardness of 6. Howlite
is often dyed to imitate turquoise. Turquoise made in a laboratory has a very
uniform color. Chalky varieties of turquoise are often coated with wax or oil to
enhance color - and when treated like this, the color change is not permanent.

A style of cut found in gemstone jewelry are cabochons. Cabochon cuts are widely
used for gemstones that are 1) of lower clarity and therefore will not reflect
much light. And/or 2) are of exceptional color and/or 3) are opaque in nature (
such as opal or onyx) and or 4) have special optical properties or inclusions
that are best displayed in cabochons (e.g. cats eye or star ruby) 5) are too
soft to be cut in facets (moonstone, opal)

How To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because they are very beautiful items. And like their higher counterpart, natural diamonds their value increases over time. Many hobbyists love to find, collect and finish the wide variety of gemstones available today. Read long as we examine the loose gemstones hobby.

To begin with your first priority is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to understand as much as possible about the subject of gemstones. The more you know about each kind of gemstone the better off you'll be. You will know exactly what to look for.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they have even lent their names to specific colors. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones become higher in value when they equal the colors in the spectrum of yellow, blue, violet, green, orange and red. They are valued much less the more they deviate from the spectral color.

Gemstone cut is the second most important value determination to look at. How precise the cut is is the factor that determines the amount of light is reflected by the gemstone. The cut will factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and its final value.

Next up is the aspect of clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal flaws ( known as inclusions) or the outside blemishes of a stone. Any large flaws can be seen with the unaided eye with others needing to be magnified 10X

Next thing to look at is the duo of weight and size. Because gemstones vary and specific gravity or density. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gemstones who that are just too big or fragile to be used for jewelry. Take each gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the US in Alabama you can find Beryl, blue and yellow; Smoky Quartz and Hematite. And if you travel to Canada you will find nephrite jade in the Frances Lake area in the Yukon Territory or blue spinel from Daillebout, Quebec along with ammolite from Lethbridge, Alberta. Think of collecting gemstones as a great hobby and pastime.

The Halley's Comet Opal is the largest uncut black opal in the world, according
to the Guinness Book of World Records. It is so named because it was unearthed
in 1986, a year when Halley's Comet could be seen from Earth. It is the third
largest gem grade black opal ever recorded, the largest one extant, and the
largest specimen ever found in its region. It was found at Lightning Ridge in
Australia by the Lunatic Hill Mining Syndicate. It weighs 1982.5 carats and is
about the size of a man's fist. The Halley's Comet Opal a very fine specimen of
an opal, with few flaws or blemishes and a large green and orange 1.6 cm thick
color bar which goes through the opal. Formed about 20 million years ago, it is
an example of a nobby, which is a natural lump-shaped opal found only at
Lightning Ridge. Currently it is for sale at $1.2 million.

Other than the oil on emeralds, which can last for years before needing replacement, any quality enhancement is permanent and should not require special care. With emeralds, you should simply be careful not to clean the stone too vigorously or you might remove the layer of wax or oil, changing the appearance of the stone. If this happens, bring it to your jeweler to have the layer reapplied. Bringing your emerald in for a cleaning and re-oiling on a regular basis will help keep it looking its best.
